Chapter Six
Dayton Rawlins was headed out the door of his house, on his way to the bar, when he stopped to look at the roses sitting in a vase on his table. He picked up the card to read it one more time.
Dayton,
I am so sorry about being such a bitch to you the other night. You were a true gentleman and deserved much better treatment. Then when I saw you at my fatherâs office, I should have apologized right then and there. But I was thrown for a loop and I hid behind the guise of âbusiness comes firstâ. Please accept my apology, and if you arenât busy Saturday night after closing, perhaps I could buy you a cup of coffee and apologize in person. I promise to stay sober this time.
Ashtyn
He smiled at the little smiley face she put at the bottom of the card. No woman had ever sent him roses before, and it had embarrassed him initially when they were delivered to the bar. The guys had all kidded him about it, but it became clear they were actually a little jealous when the barmaid ratted him out and told them who they were from.
âWell, Miss Ashtyn, letâs see what kind of game youâve got, girl.â He pulled one of the dark red roses from the vase, opened his guitar case, and stuck the rose inside. He closed the case and patted the lid. âFor good luck.â
Dayton picked his keys up off the table and headed out the door with his case in hand, a little jittery inside. He hadnât been this excited about an evening with a girl since he was a teenager.
By the time he got to the truck, the excitement was just too much to contain. He pulled open the truck door and tossed his guitar onto the passenger seat. Then he pumped his arm in the air and hollered, âYeah!â
With some of the jitters worked out of his system, he hopped into the truck and turned the key, put it in gear, and peeled out, throwing gravel in the air behind him as he shot down the dirt road toward town.

Ashtyn spun once in front of the mirror to make sure the view was terrific from all angles. Sheâd taken off work early Friday just to shop for her trip to the Slinginâ Bull tonight, and it had taken seven hours to find the perfect outfit. It had been complicated by the fact that she had to consider sheâd be riding the mechanical bull, which ruled out dresses and chunky jewelry. So the outfit had to stand out by itself, without the aid of a lot of accessories.
Sheâd fallen in love with a leather jacket that could actually be worn as a shirt, but it was too heavy for a hot bar. So she bought it to save for another event.
The top she settled on was black and form-fitting, with wide hand-made lace, in bright turquoise, that formed a v-neckline and served to attach the long sleeves to the bodice in a way that left her shoulders bare.
